If you want a long happy and fulfilled life then you know one of the secrets is a healthy body. In order for you to have a healthy body, you must put the time into the gym, there is no way around it. However, many people make so many mistakes when it comes to the gym that we’ve decided to list the top three mistakes you are (probably) making at the gym!
Not Having A Plan
Many people go to the gym and just start doing things without any sort of strategy. That's the equivalent of looking for just any car and buying the first car you see. You must have a strategy for when you go to the gym. First, figure out what your goals are? Which do you want more of: muscular endurance, muscular size (and less fat), or absolute strength/power? Once you figure out what you want then the next step is finding the right exercise variables (also called exercise parameters) to get you there. That means adjusting your sets, reps, tempo, intensity, rest, etc so that they get you to your goals. But what exercises do you do? Well, that’s the next step is figuring out what movements to do. Well, all humans do seven functional movements throughout their lives: squat, lunge, bend, push, pull, lunge, twist, gait/walk. Everything you do in the gym and in life is a version of one of these movements. The goal is to find the easiest version of each movement and then doing more challenging movements over time (this is called progression). That is what having a plan looks like. Put things on paper and follow your plan as best you can. Also, make sure to time your rest intervals don’t just estimate.
Not Asking For Help
Many new gym-goers will spend days, weeks, months, and sometimes years in the gym doing the wrongs things the wrong way. If you don’t know something- whether it’s what to do or how to do it, just ask someone! There are experienced people in the gym that would be glad to help you out, not to mention the trainers that get paid to help you while in the gym. Make sure to ask for advice on your form. Bad form is the number one reason for injury in the gym. Back pain will ruin your desire for a good looking body so ask for help and get it right the first time.
Not Mobilizing & Stretching Our bodies take tons of abuse throughout our lives. Most people never spend the time to fix their bodies before actually hitting the weights. So, instead of hitting the weights (or the treadmill) for an hour after sitting at a desk for hours make sure to stretch your tight muscles before you strengthen your weak (phasic) muscles. This will bring your body more into balance because it is addressing your muscular imbalances (which we all have). Spending a few minutes before each workout to stretch and mobilize your joints will go a long way for increasing range of motion, preventing injury, and increasing your strength. Not having a plan, not asking for help, and not stretching or mobilizing can cost you your gym career and possibly your body. Make sure to always have a plan, always ask for help, and always stretch your joints. These tips will go a long way towards ensuring your health and safety. Now go out there and hit the weights!
